Q. Why are some deer droppings clumped together while others are in pellet form? - Bryan, S.D.

A. Clumps vs. pellets is a direct result of a deer's diet. If he has been feeding on acorns and leafy plants, the droppings are more likely to be pellets. If he has been eating apples and clover, the droppings are more likely to be clumps. A common misperception by beginners is that the formation of the droppings indicate the deer's sex. Not so, says MoDeerHunter.com's Tony Kalna: "The best information that deer droppings give us is about the whitetail's diet. It is very difficult to determine the sex of the deer that left them."
